Abstract

The kinetics of the oxidation of Ethambutol (EMB) by 1-Chlorobenzotriazole (CBT) has been studied in alkaline buffer medium (pH 9.2) at 303 K. The reaction is zero order with respect to CBT and fractional order with respect to both EMB and (OH-. Addition of a neutral salt and the reaction product have no effect on the reaction rate. A slight inverse solvent isotopic effect is observed. The reaction mechanism involving an electrophilic attack by the oxidizing species at the alcoholic group in EMB, with a hypochlorite ester as reaction intermediate on subsequent stepwise oxidation, hydrolysis and decomposition giving products is proposed. Kinetic parameters are evaluated. Rate equation is derived to account the observed kinetic data.
