Abstract

Ultramafic rocks (UR) from the Tarakanambi area (India) are assocd. with trondhjemitic gneisses, belites, amphibolites, etc. The UR include gabbroic anorthosites, and form a layered complex. Based on their mineral assocns., 6 groups of UR are recognized. Orthopyroxenes in these UR are enstatite, with a relatively high Al content. The clinopyroxene is diopsidic, with total Al 0.068 atom​/formula unit. The pale green coloration of hornblende is due to the low (0.95​%) TiO2 content; it is a magnesio-​hornblende. Temp. calcns. using the model proposed by P.R.A. Wells (1977) for the pyroxene pains from the UR yielded a value of 690°. This metamorphic temp. of 690° for the UR indicates imprints of upper amphibolite-​facies metamorphism
