Abstract

The amphiboles are riebeckite represented by; a true riebeckite, a riebeckite with an affinity to magnesioriebeckite, and another with an affinity to arfvedsonite. Chem. and textural studies show that the alkali-​amphiboles were formed by soda-​metasomatism at low temp. The true riebeckite was formed by replacement of accessory Fe ore, and the riebeckite with the magnesioriebeckite affinity by replacement of hornblende. The riebeckite with an affinity to arfvedsonite was freshly formed in veinlets intersecting the rocks. X-​ray studies show that there is no difference in the 2 θ values for the 3 varieties. A variation in the chem. compn. of the true riebeckite and the ribeckite withe the magnesioriebeckite affinity exists. The naturally occurring varieties do not show a pronounced variation in cell size.
