Abstract

Urbanization, industrialization and consequent population explosion have polluted many important water bodies esp. those close to urban centers. Amanikere, one of the ancient tanks of Karnataka, is located within the town limits of Tumkur. It was built to meet the needs of drinking and irrigation and is now facing the problem of pollution. This study aims to understand the impact of urbanization and industrialization on water quality of the tank. Water samples were collected at different points in the tank during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons and were analyzed for various physico-chem. parameters. The results indicate that the water of Amanikere is of high elec. cond., total suspended solids and phosphates. Nitrates, chlorides, DO and sulfates are found to be within the permissible limits
