Abstract

Scanning electronic microscopic observations on leaf surface in ten populations of Urginea indica of the tribe scilleae are presented. Leaf cuticular ornamentation, stomatal variations and differences, in wax deposition and stomatal frequency play an important role in delimiting the populations of Urginea indica. It is suggested that leaf surface characters can be used as secondary or supporting characters in biosystematic studies. Our investigation has shown considerable variations in guard cell ratio, stomatal aperture, placement of stomata on ridges and furrows and other micromorphological features of interest.
